Camera crew
Stuart Ireland, owner of Calypso Reef Imagery, is a keen diver and qualified marine biologist. He turned his passion for the underwater world into a profession when he started Calypso Reef Imagery over 20 years ago. He first turned his hand to underwater videography back in the late 1980’s: Calypso was one of the first in Queensland to invest in digital photography equipment for underwater applications and has since moved into 4K and UAV technology.
Underwater Filming
With more than 25 years of experience and logging more than 5,500 hours underwater, behind the lens, Stuart is one of the most experienced and professional underwater cameraman in Cairns. As well as spending countless hours filming the Great Barrier Reef, including several seasons of coral spawning, other local underwater locations Stuart has filmed includes the Undara Lava Tubes, when they were flooded, and Mossman Gorge.
Stuart has travelled the world working on a range of commercial underwater photography and videography contracts. No location is too exotic or extreme, as evidenced by his 2010 Antarctic underwater film shoot completed amongst the ice-bergs. Stuart is also an active member of Tourism Tropical North Queensland and the Cairns Photographic Society, as well as being a board member of the Cairns Underwater Film Festival.
