Instructional Video for DJI Action 4 and 6

DJI Action 4 & 6 Camera Hire: Quick Guide

Use this guide alongside the instructional video and the cards supplied in your Calypso hire case. The video demonstrates an Action 4; controls and app screens may differ on your hired model.

Before you leave

  • Download DJI Mimo using the appropriate QR code in your hire case. Do this before boarding while you have a reliable internet connection.
  • Check the case for your camera, spare battery, lens cloth and instruction cards.
  • Put the camera’s wrist strap around your wrist before entering the water. Keep hold of the camera while swimming, snorkelling or diving.

Turn on the camera and choose a mode

Press the side button to turn the camera on. It starts in the mode used last.

Press the side button again to switch between Photo and Video. The touchscreen cannot be operated through the underwater housing, so use the housing’s buttons.

Take a photo

  1. Select Photo mode.
  2. Press the top button to take a photograph.
  3. Look for the brief green indicator light confirming the shot.

Record a video

  1. Select Video mode.
  2. Press the top button to start recording.
  3. Check for the flashing red light and recording timer.
  4. Press the top button again to stop, and check that recording has ended.

Aim for short clips of around 30 seconds. The presenter recommends keeping recordings under five minutes to help limit heat and condensation inside the housing.

For better underwater photos and videos, get close to your subject without touching marine life.

Switch off between uses

Hold the side button for approximately one second to switch the camera off. This helps conserve battery and reduce heat.

Quick capture

The video also demonstrates starting a recording by pressing the top button while the camera is off. Quick capture behaviour depends on the camera’s settings, so check the mode and recording indicator before relying on it.

Change the battery

Only open the housing when you are out of the water, with the camera and your hands dry.

  1. Open the housing latch and remove the camera.
  2. Find the battery door on the side marked with the DJI logo.
  3. Release the latch and open the door.
  4. Remove the battery and insert the spare, matching the battery contacts to those inside the camera.
  5. Close and secure the battery door. Do not force it—if it will not close, check the battery’s orientation.
  6. Turn the camera on and check the battery level.
  7. Check that the lens and housing window are clean, then return the camera to the housing and secure its latch.

Use the supplied lens cloth where needed. If you are unsure whether the housing is correctly closed, contact Calypso before putting it back in the water.

If the camera stops responding

Your case contains troubleshooting instructions and a backup microSD card.

Follow the supplied troubleshooting card first. If it directs you to replace the card, follow its removal and formatting instructions carefully. Formatting erases the card’s contents, so do not format a card containing photos or videos you want to keep.

Keep the original card safe and contact Calypso if you are unsure what to do.

Copy your photos and videos to your phone

Start the transfer on the return journey, before bringing the camera back to the shop.

1. Connect through DJI Mimo

  1. Turn on the camera and enable Bluetooth on your phone.
  2. Open DJI Mimo.
  3. Follow the setup prompts and allow the permissions needed to connect and save your media.
  4. Select Connect when your camera appears.
  5. Accept the connection request on the camera and any network connection prompt on your phone.

2. Download your files

Seeing thumbnails in DJI Mimo does not mean the files are saved on your phone yet.

  1. Wait for the camera’s thumbnails to load.
  2. Open the selection controls and choose Batch Select, or select the files you want.
  3. Tap Download, then confirm if prompted.
  4. Wait for the transfer to finish.

Button names and positions may vary with the app version.

3. Check before returning the camera

Open your phone’s Photos or Gallery app and check that your pictures and videos are there.

Switch the camera off, then open a few photos and play a downloaded video. This confirms you have saved copies on your phone rather than simply viewing files on the camera.
